Patient Safety

Overview
This project is adapting the national NHS patient safety course for Gloucester Royal Hospital. I was the sole designer while creating the course , from sketching a storyboard to deliver the design , excluding videos.
Building trust through weekly meetings with cross-function team members is helpful for minimising the gap between the discussion and understanding the users' needs and learning experiences.
Challenge
The stakeholders expressed concerns over the timeline for implementing animations and transitions in the redesign. They viewed these features as essential for improving user engagement. My linear supervisor, the team leader, wasn't a designer. Therefore, I listed the project log and constantly reported the progress to him.
I demonstrated low-fidelity prototypes in a meeting to show what transitions could provide an engaging experience. By finding a middle ground, I ensured the design met user needs while respecting development constraints.
What were the original course problems?
-
The usability heuristic has two failures: visibility of system status and user control and freedom. Users had to keep clicking many buttons to unfold the following content to continue reading. The original course separated the whole content into too many sections, so users didn't know the progress of the course they were taking and lacked efficiency in use.
-
We tested the original course and got lost while missing clicking some section.
-
The colour palate of this course is dull. The expression of people on graphics look sad and negative.
What did I do?
-
Combined a few sections of content to decrease the number of clicking buttons repetitively

Used some “card design” and next buttons to put massive texts at the same screen to decrease the texts users see at first glance

Redraw some illustrations to change the vibe of people on graphics to deliver relatively positive learning experiences .

Changed colour to show clicked button status to enable users which section they are reading

Result and Impact
-
Receiving at least 90% positive feedback compare to original version of Patient Safety course.
-
Increase number of people finished the course by themself without calling for help to finish the course.
-
The course is used for all the new staff in Gloucester Royal Hospital.
